"If you are from a country where you have undergone persecution, or you have a fear of being persecuted if you return to that country in the future, you may be eligible for asylum. The persecution must have been based on at least one of five grounds: race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
You may apply for asylum if you are in the United States or at a port of entry. You may apply for asylum regardless of your immigration status and within one year of your arrival to the United States. You may still qualify for asylum even if has been more than one year from your arrival date if there are changed or exceptional circumstances.
If you have a fear of persecution based on one of the above grounds and you think you may be eligible for asylum, please contact our office."
